During the 1950s and 1960s, organized religion was much more popular. There were even people who called themselves pastors and priests. There were even spiritual leaders who wanted to convert people to their religion. However, during the 1970s and 1980s, religion began to change.

People began to see that religion was not all it was cracked up to be. Churches turned into places where people went when they wanted moral support; when they wanted protection from God or a higher power; and when they needed someone to believe in and trust in their problems and in their lives. Organized religion was no longer good news for most people, but bad news indeed.
